Stories Rooted
in the Lower Cape Fear

Illustrated children’s books rooted in the history and cultural traditions of the Lower Cape Fear.

Cape Fear Storyworks is an independent publishing initiative creating children’s books rooted in the history and cultural legacy of southeastern North Carolina — with particular attention to the lived experiences and contributions of African Americans.

Why Placed-Based Stories Matter

Children form their understanding of community, identity, and belonging through the stories they encounter. Place-based literature connects young readers to the landscapes, histories, and cultural traditions that shape the world around them.

In southeastern North Carolina and across the American South, the historical experiences and contributions of African Americans are foundational to the region’s identity. These books seek to introduce that history with care, clarity, and respect.

The Gullah Geechee stories mark the founding collection of Cape Fear Storyworks. Additional series exploring the broader historical and cultural landscape of the Lower Cape Fear region are currently in development.

Beyond the Gullah Geechee Series

Cape Fear Storyworks is developing additional children’s books exploring the wider history, landscapes, and cultural legacies of southeastern North Carolina. Future titles will highlight the lives, labor, and contributions of communities whose stories shape the region.
